TRAVEL AND TRANSPORT

Road travel

An extensive road system connects communities in all parts of Iceland. Main access roads are open all year round, making logistics easy. All population centres and major industrial sites are served by well-maintained, surfaced roads.

A network of gravel roads and tracks covers highland and remote areas. Many of these routes are open only in the summer months, and a large number are only passable for well-equipped 4-wheel drive vehicles. Look for full, in-depth information about the roads in Iceland on the website of the Icelandic Public Roads Administration.

Public transport

Coach services operate all year round, connecting major towns and villages, although winter services may be reduced. The frequency of coaches varies in different parts of the country.

Travel companies also offer day trips and longer tours to all parts of Iceland.
