A JOINT VISION

Keflavik Airport (KEF) and Keflavik Airport Development Company (Kadeco) recently presented ambitious masterplans for the airport and its surrounding area. KEF, Iceland’s most important infrastructure and the gateway to the country, foresees great growth in passenger numbers, both in tourism and transit. This generates opportunities for the adjacent municipalities but also challenges. More air travel puts pressure on all public infrastructure and has historically generated economic fluctuations. On a global scale, aviation is also challenged by environmental issues which must be addressed with new technologies and new ways of thinking.

Jointly, KEF and Kadeco have produced a 2050 vision for the airport area together with the nearby municipalities. The masterplan consists of focus areas accommodating future business opportunities, residential zones, green industrial parks and locations for R&D and innovation in aviation technologies.
